Under the leadership of automotive pioneer Eug¨¨ne Buisson, Soci¨¦t¨¦ Anonyme Fran?aise du Ferodo (SAFF), which began ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ a small workshop ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the Paris region, produced the first friction materials made ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ France. SAFF became a major player ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the automotive revolution at the start of the 20th century and was already domÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½atÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g the market for the production of brake lÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½gs and clutches on the eve of World War II. By the early 1950s, it had built its workforce up to 2,500 employees.

A fundamental ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½vention

In 1897, British entrepreneur, Herbert Frood, founded the Ferodo brand, which specialized ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ brake lÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½gs, an essential element for automobile brakÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g. He had the idea of creatÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g these materials ¨C which paved the way for the modern automobile ¨C durÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g a walk ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the English countryside. While on his walk, he saw a heavily loaded cart comÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g towards him, and its driver used one of his shoes as a brake, slidÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g it between the wheel and the brake shoe. The impact was immediate and gave Herbert Frood the idea that would soon be so well used by Eug¨¨ne Buisson ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ France.

The automobile was a marker of social status ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the early 1950s, but only 21% of French households could afford one.

Marchal ¨C spotlight on the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Pierre Marchal, the pioneer of electric lightÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g, was a lifelong supporter of motor racÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g. In 1961, his company celebrated its five millionth fog lamp, and the followÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g year, the first Ferrari equipped with Marchal iodÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½e headlights won the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The very first manually operated wÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½dshield wiper was ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½vented by a woman, Mary Anderson, ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the United States ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ 1903. Another American woman, Charlotte Bridgwood, was responsible for its automation ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ 1917.

The birth of electric vehicles

The first electric vehicle ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ history was French ¨C the Trouv¨¦ Tricycle ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½vented ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Paris ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ 1881. And ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ 1899, the ¡°Jamais Contente¡± electric vehicle also made news when it broke a land speed record by becomÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g the first automobile to reach 100 km/h!

The post-war boom was a highly dynamic period for both automakers and automotive suppliers. SAFF, which had 2,500 employees ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the early 1950s, took advantage of this prosperous period to create numerous ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½novations and extend its busÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ess to cover all types of electrical equipment for vehicles such as spark plugs, alternators and starters, as well as ignition, lightÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g and wiper systems ¨C a strategy that quickly paid off. FollowÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g numerous acquisitions and drawÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g on its almost monopolistic position ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the French automotive brake and clutch equipment supply market, Ferodo embarked on a new challenge ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the early 1960s: to expand ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ternationally.

Cibi¨¦¡¯s reach was not limited to France. In South America, this iconic automotive brand became a household name ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ the design of car headlamps.

Volkswagen Type 2

On March 8, 1950, the Volkswagen Type 2 was launched by the German manufacturer, equipped with wÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½dshield wipers and a horn manufactured by ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½. Very soon it was given the friendly nickname of "Bulldog" and became a pop culture icon. It still holds the record for the longest production run for a vehicle of this type.

As the 1980s began, SAFF¡¯s reach had become global. Abram Neiman, founder of the eponymous group, was the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ventor of the Neiman anti-theft device ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ 1931. He made his fortune thanks to the Neiman key, the system that allows a vehicle to be started by ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½sertÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½g a key ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½to the dashboard.
